Water Proofing The Basement Of Your Home
Water proofing basements is one of those things that people never get around to until it is too late. Even finished basements are not immune from risk. There are a lot of factors that determine the risks of flood or water damage, but basically everyone has some risk. The problem is the basement waterproofing is often expensive. People who have never had a problem with flooding or water damage wonder why they should put up with the cost. The fact is that they may never find out. Often, nothing bad will happen for years. When it does happen, however, you will be happy if you have waterproofed your basement.
I live in a desert area. It is very dry most of the time, and water proofing basements is something that most people have never heard of in my town. After all, we only have a big storm once every 20 years or so. The problem is that when we do have a big storm, it can cause a flash flood. Areas that get a lot of rainfall, ironically enough, are often not the ones that are the most at risk for water damage. It is the areas that seldom get rainfall that are less able to absorb large floods. When the water comes pouring down, it is too late for water proofing basements. There will be no warning and no chance to do anything about it. Often, houses have tens of thousands of dollars of damage just because a few simple steps were not taken to prepare them. It happened to me, and it can happen to you.
The problem is that water proofing basements is an involved and difficult process. Often, while water proofing basements, other problems are turned up that have to be addressed. You can expose dangerous mold that was previously contained in the old concrete. Of course, this mold should be taken care of, but often it would have sat there safely for years to come if you had not t started doing major work and tearing up the concrete.
Water proofing basements is one of those frustrating kinds of home improvement projects where every step that you take to fix something turns up another problem. In the end, however, waterproofing basements is worth it. After all, it is worth spending the time and money when your home might be at stake. It is always a much better choice than to let the rain catch you by surprise. That is never pleasant.
